It accumulates in mitochondria and covalently binds to mitochondrial proteins by reacting with free thiol groups on cysteine residues. This enables stable mitochondrial staining that is retained independently of mitochondrial membrane potential, making MTDR suitable for assessing mitochondrial content and distribution in live cells.
